i am so stoked! i hesistate to blog this because i do not want to come off as a braggy mcgraggerson-know it all-perfecty homeschooling etc....! i am posting this because i am excited!!!
nate has shown a readiness to want to learn how to read the last few weeks. i had NO idea how to do this!!! about a yr ago, knowing i was homeschooling, went and did a lot of research knowing that this day would one day come. like all things in parenting the first child!! you have no idea how to get over the first hurdles! (nursing! sleep training! teaching your child to read! potty training! etc...) so, i learned up on the different systems and decided to wait and see for readiness signs and then just go with my gut. i struggled with 2 learning styles, phonics and old school memory. nate is a logical thinker. he must understand how it works before he tries it, so i thought maybe old school memory would work...but then he loves silly songs that i make up using phonics...so i did both
any-e-ways. i often find nate 'reading' books all over the house. he loves to read but he has a thirst to know everything about anything. i can't answer most of his questions! i tell him "once you know how to read you can look it up yourself and read all about it"
so, yesterday, after hearing over and over and over and over "mom! will you read to me???" i took the phonic books (thanks jodie!!!) and just read them to him...then i had him start to read them....and he did! he started to read 2 letter words and 1 or 2 3 letter. i thought it was a fluke....but chris came home and nate read to him! he's NOT full blown reading but he's getting it! and my confidence is growing!
so as of today he can read i, a, to, no, on, be, toy!, an, do, mom, dad, love, and a few more...what is really exciting is he is discovering words all over the place, road signs, food containers, t.v, news paper, signs around town....etc... i can see him clicking!
i asked him to day if we wanted to read a book, he said 'no thanks, i have to go work in the shop with dad'
i said all that to say this. parenting is not easy. hurdles are everywhere. god is always near...thank god for that....sigh....
